TURNAROUND ARTS: CHICAGO
Herzl School of Excellence is one of four Chicago Public Schools that provides a unique program of the arts integration through Turnaround Arts, an initiative of the President's Committee on Arts and Humanities. Because of this program, Herzl students interact with the artist Kerry James Marshall and participate in a wide range of art classes and activities designed to support their academic growth.
City Year helps to close gaps in high-need schools by supporting students' academic and social-emotional development while also providing schools with the additional capacity to enhance school culture and climate.
Barrel of Monkeys (BOM) is an ensemble of actor/educators who create an alternative learning environment in which children share their personal voices and celebrate the power of their imaginations. BOM accomplishes this through creative writing workshops and in-school performances of children’s stories. BOM also engages the broader community in support of the visions of children through public performances of their work.
The Herzl Child-Parent Center is the largest, free, full-day, pre-school program in the Chicago Public Schools, consisting of seven full day classrooms. We provide students with access to a high quality early childhood education, focusing on kindergarten readiness. Each classroom has a certified early childhood teacher and teacher assistant. The Herzl Child-Parent Center has achieved a Gold Circle of Quality from ExceleRate Illinois. The Herzl Child-Parent Center offers families access to a wide variety of resources and meaningful involvement. Our Parent Resource Teacher hosts daily workshops to build knowledge and skills, welcomes families into our Parent Resource Room, and supports families with home-school activities. Our School-Community Representative mobilizes resources, including providing referrals to community and social service organizations and conducting home visits.
Building on the First Edition, our new K-5 Language Arts curriculum is a comprehensive, standards-based core literacy program that engages teachers and students through compelling, real world content and builds equitable and inclusive learning opportunities for all students.
Columbia's after-school programs bring teaching artists into Chicago Public Schools. The Community Schools program helps Chicago kids express their creativity through the arts in after-school activities and community programs. Community Schools unites the most important factors in kids’ lives: school, family, and community. This holistic approach builds on lessons happening in the classroom every day with after-school opportunities for arts education, physical activity, tutoring, and cultural enrichment activities. These programs support the whole child, including social, emotional, and physical development and foster college and career awareness and readiness. Students dance, sing, act, draw, write, play instruments, and explore media technology such as photography, video, and animation.
